We're pretty dependent on the basic capabilities of Drupal, and I don't
think it can handle recurring events.
Also, don't forget that this is a community site. It will ultimately be
up to the posters to decide the best place for their content. Your
distinction is correct (something you can attend defines an event,
everything else is news/announcements), and we should clearly make this
distinction on the intro page. But I can certainly see events being
cross-posted to both lists, and at the end of the day we can't be too
fussy about how the community is using the site, unless someone is
wilfully abusing it.

I agree that the CMS conference is an event. I think that anything that
is news related includes announcements like press releases or any
information that goes along with OASIS announcements about DITA and
anything about the open toolkit or other products.
I think they should definitely handle recurring events.

Sorry to be responding so late to this ..
- What determines the difference between an event and a
news/announcement item? In looking at the examples, I'd think that the
CM Strategies Conference would be an event. It seems like we'd need to
clearly define what type of items go on each list. I'd think that
anything that can be attended by a group of people is an event and
anything else is news/announcement.
- I'd set up both of these lists in the same chronological order, the
mockups are reversed from each other.
- Will the events page handle recurring events?
