RE: [dita-fa-edboard] Progress on spam prevention

Quick progress report:

1. I believe I have deleted all the spam on the site and blocked the offenders.
If you catch any, please let me know.

2. Neil is installing the spam module as we speak. It:

* automatically unpublishes posts containing too many URIs. (We've set this for
6, but can change it.)

* automatically unpublishes posts containing too many of the same URI. (We've
set this for 3, but can change it.)

* automatically unpublishes duplicate content (the same content posted more
than twice to the site).

* automatically blocks users who post two instances of identified spam.

* allows users to mark content as spam (through a link at the bottom of the
page).

* notifies users when their content has been identified as spam (so they can
appeal if there's a mistake).

* notifies site admins of identified spam and provides an easy interface for
restoring. Content identified as spam that isn't restored within two weeks is
automatically deleted.

3. Regarding Bob's concern about search engines, Greg and Neil don't believe
that's happening.

All comment links have the 'rel=nofollow' attribute added. This means that the
search engines
(including Google, MSN, Yahoo!) do not follow those links and spammers get no
benefit from abusing our public commons.
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/01/preventing-comment-spam.html This
feature is incorporated into the core of the Drupal system.

I am just returning from vacation. In my absence, Neil installed the spam
module on a test site. I am evaluating it now. As soon as I'm through, Neil
will install it on the live site. I'll let you all know how it works, and we
can evaluate its effectiveness and determine if other measures are necessary.
