RE: [dita-fa-edboard] Tweaking the navigation

Hi Carol,
I'm almost back from a long international trip. We're starting the DITA
Boot Camp tomorrow in Wakefield. I'll be able to get to the xml.org site
questions when I'm back in the office. Flew in from Stockholm yesterday.

DITA EdBoard,
We seem to have consensus that installing
http://drupal.org/project/nodewords
would be good, but if we do, who would use it and how?

Would the EdBoard assign nodewords just for our major pages?

Would we expect authors to insert their own nodewords when they create a
page?

I just want to be sure we don't add to the complexity of creating a
page--especially after we have the categories module installed.

Hi Carol,

You certainly should. I use robots.txt for my clients.

It prevents the search engines from wasting time crawling extraneous
content.

Together with an accurate sitemap.xml file, these two best practices
instruct the engines to find where the good stuff is.

Take a peek at http://www.ditausers.org/sitemap.xml and
http://www.robots.txt as an example.

Using Google Webmaster Tools, you can see how your site pages really get
improved Quality Scores when you follow their advice.
http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

Cheers.

Bob.

	Okay, I'll ask Neil again.

He was looking at Drupal's nodewords module
http://drupal.org/project/nodewords. It would allow us to set
descriptions for
every page, plus give us a lot more control over things like
robots.txt files
to specifically disallow friendly search engines from indexing
certain content.
He wasn't sure we'd actually use it. Would we?

	It's not just for SEO.

The description in the meta tag shows up in abstracts in some
search results.
