There is of course a multipart  PRIMARY type, and it have it also as a
secondary type seems confusing. Multipart however is largely used in email
(the original reason for  MIME) to carry multi-component attachments.
It does seem suited for what you have in mind here!!

Why  not multipart/xml ?

Yes, model is now a ratified primary  MIME type. Not sure how widely adopted
it is; mostly in the VRML community, who use model/vrml
