Looking only at this "elementDecl" proposal (deleting the rest):

I guess I don't see why "modelType" is necessary. With this
stuff it's sufficiently easy to look at the first one or two
characters; the type can be resurrected cheaply whenever it's
desired.
OK, so my minimalist inclinations are showing. Remove four
constants and a parameter, and the interface gets smaller.
