Agreed, and what'd be nice would be a language by
language generalization of this sort of mechanism,
ideally to move the binding to a DOM implementation out
of the code and into the environment. This can be done
for COM as you've demonstrated, it can also be done for
Java, and probably for any language/platform which 
supports dynamic loading.

The crucial thing is that all COM DOMs use the same 
mechanism (including some agreement on Win registry 
keys), all the Java DOMs do likewise (including the 
specification of a Java system property), and ditto for 
all the other implementation languages which can support 
such a mechanism. If that's going to happen at all it'll
have to happen under the auspices of the DOM WG.

Note tho', that this involves stepping outside of IDL
to give us an entry point to bootstrap into the main DOM
interfaces.
