No, I'm not proposing that quite yet -- the HTML WG is still
discussing this issue, and things might still change before the XHTML
REC comes out.

None of these is under our control -- they would have to be proposed
from within the W3C, and I cannot see any being approved without the
HTML WG's consent.

OASIS controls xml.org now, and they probably would not want to set
themselves up in direct opposition to the W3C like this.

Let's just wait a little while. We've made our opinions well-known on
the XML-Dev mailing list, and I know that many people here have sent
their comments into the Director or the HTML WG. I don't think that
I'm breaching member-confidentiality rules by saying that our
discussions here have been noticed.
If anyone is really excited and cannot wait to act, go buy the
namespaces.com domain so that we have somewhere to hang this sort of
thing. purl.org might also be co-operative.
