I am not sure I understand question #1, but if it helps, I know is that
microsoft has in some way backed the company datachannel who
supply a java version of its IE5 xml/xsl com components. This product came
out earlier this year. (see www.datachannel.com) . Though
their documentation does not at all suggest this, datachannel is *not*
providing commercial support for this product unless you pay $5K per year.

The other problem is that there are those who believe that this product is
far from production worthy, and it is definitely far behind other
XML/XSL products in keeping up with current releases of standards. To make
matters even worse, both companies refuse to make a
public statement in regards to any of these issues and their intentions.
Thus one pretty much has to either cough up $5K on the off chance
that this makes any difference (I have my doubts), or do what we ended up
doing, porting off of their product to IBM (or whatever)

Interestingly, i think that this is going to really hurt XML/XSL because
most serious app developers would like to use a decent java
package for server development, but the most prevalent client environment is
IE5 which is turning out to be significantly different.
This means that server XML/XSL and client XML/XSL de facto standards are now
divergent. It remains to be seen what MS and or
datachannel have up their sleeve, but right now it is kind of bleak for
those like our company that would benefit a lot from identical
server and client standards for XML and XSL (T)

I personally am waiting to see how commercial licenses work with the major
vendors. The best seems to be IBM who give away source
and pretty open licenses for no charge (I am no lawyer, so YMMV)
