Not true. In a classical document markup environment, attributes are an
important means to separate document content from metadata. It is much
easier to process (and eventually to ignore or filter, e.g. for
displaying/editing content) additional information that is encoded in a
different way than the document's content. XML was made for simple
processing, and attributes can be used to support this.

This content/attribute distinction may be less important for XML-RPC or
other data-exchange XML applications, but these are only one (admittedly
important) part of the XML picture.
