Chapter 22 of The XML Bible introduces VML and gives some examples. This
chapter was primarily written by Heather Williamson. Examples from that
chapter are online at

SVG may be of long-term interest, but right now it's vapor and little more.
It seems obvious that the W3C pushed early working drafts out the door
before they were even close to finished to head off the threat of VML.
Large chunks of the spec say essentially "To be filled in later". VML is a
lot more useful today.
