I am not aware that a reverse proxy setup requires polling.
The idea of reverse proxies is sound and efficient.
An HTTP/XML application can benefit greatly (in terms of
scalability) from a reverse proxy setup if the application's URL
sub-tree is architected so as to facilitate the use this
cost-effective, simple, generic technology. The design work
simply amounts to factoring the application's data (bits
of info that change at the same time are grouped together) into
HTTP entities (which just so happen to correspond to XML
external entities and/or complete documents) and then to provide
for those entities to be served up using HTTP message headers
which will enable the caches to do their thing.
