You can avoid the problem by storing the IP as a hex address, as in:
ff.ff.ff.ff
<pattern
value="[0-9a-f][0-9a-f].[0-9a-f][0-9a-f].[0-9a-f][0-9a-f].[0-9a-f][0-9a-f]"/>
