xml-dev - When to use NMTOKEN, CDATA attributes?

Hi!

When designing a DTD, while deciding the attribute value types
when should one use a CDATA attribute type and when to use
a NMTOKEN attribute type?

Syntactically looking at the production rules, the difference is clear
But, semantically when should one use one over the other? Why?
