It was pointed out at XTech 2000 that this syntax makes processing of
SVG with XSLT somewhat difficult, a point with which I concur.
However, I've not been tracking the SVG development closely, so I am
unaware of the rationale for this (apart from the obvious Postscript-ness
of it).
