Seconded.
In fact I suspect that the content of my post could probably be
traced back to that paper fairly directly.

Indeed. I hope I didn't suggest otherwise.
Funnily enough one of the commonest complaints I've heard from
people using RMI is along the lines of: "But why do all the
methods have to throw RemoteException? Why can't a remote
object appear just like a local one?".
