X2X will actually do replacement like this. The example that comes with the
demo version replaces a paragraph. X2X is at:

Setting up to run the examples, and figuring out just what was going on, was
a bit tricky, but it does do the XLINK stuff. This may not be exactly the
same as doing it during parsing as you wanted, but take a look anyway.
