Actually, RFC1738 specifically mentions the pipe symbol ("|") as being
unsafe and says it therefore should be encoded! The colon is not included
in a list of such characters. 2396 also says that use of the pipe symbol is
"unwise" (page 10). 1738 and 2396 also specifically allow colons in the path
specification.
So why do the main browsers want to replace the colon by the pipe???
