We're thinking of making an applet version of Merlot
(http://www.merlotxml.org) at some point.  It's open-source, so
you're welcome to take a stab at it. :)

I'm not sure it would be much use as an XML editor in a web browser
(but
then I'm not sure you're using the right tool for the job!), but you
might
want to take a look at the talk I gave at XML Dev Con:
