OASIS TC call for participation: ebXML Messaging Services

A new OASIS technical committee is being formed. The ebXML Messaging
Services Technical Committee has been proposed by David Burdett, Commerce
One; Rik Drummond, Drummond Group; Bob Miller, GE Global Exchange Services;
Jim Hughes, Hewlett-Packard; John Ibbotson, IBM; Brian Gibb, Sterling
Commerce; and Chris Ferris, Sun Microsystems.

The request for a new TC meets the requirements of the OASIS TC process, and
is appended to this email.

To become a member of this new TC you must 1) be an employee of an OASIS
member organization or an Individual member of OASIS, 2) notify the
committee chair, Brian Gibb (brian_gibb@stercomm.com), of your intent to
participate at least 15 days prior to the first meeting, and 3) participate
in the first meeting on 17-18 July, 2001. You should also subscribe to the
TC's discussion list. (For the procedure for joining after the first meeting
see the TC process at http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/process.shtml.)

The mail list ebxml-msg@lists.oasis-open.org is for committee
discussions. TC members as well as any other interested OASIS members should
subscribe to the list. Do this by sending a message to
ebxml-msg-request@lists.oasis-open.org with the word "subscribe" as the body
of the message. (Note that subscribing to the mail list does not make you a
member of the TC; to become a member you must contact the TC chair as
described in the preceeding paragraph.)

Name of the TC: OASIS ebXML Messaging Services Technical Committee

Statement of Purpose: a Technical Committee in OASIS to develop and
recommend technology for the transport, routing and packaging of business
transactions using standard Internet technologies. This work will foster
consistency across specifications developed in other forums and carry
forward the work started in the ebXML Transport, Routing and Packaging
project team. Further information on the ebXML Initiative can be found at
http://www.ebxml.org. The TC intends to complete its work by December 31,
2002 and will reconsider its charter at that time.

This Technical Committee will:

* address maintenance issues that may arise in the implementation of ebXML
Messaging Service Specification Version 1.0, including the development of
minor releases of the Specification;
* respond to requirements raised by committee members and by the joint
OASIS -- UN/CEFACT Requirements and Technical Architecture Committees;
* prepare Technical Reports, White Papers and other documents to further the
consistent adoption of messaging service specifications;
* proactively engage with related activities in external forums, especially
the W3C Activities and Working Groups;
* coordinate TC activities with other technical committees and work groups
operating within OASIS and UN/CEFACT; and
* develop future versions of the ebXML Messaging Service Specifications with
consideration of related technologies adopted by other forums.

The ebXML Messaging Technical Committee will use the ebXML Messaging
Specification Version 1.0 as the starting point for discussion at the first
meeting. This document is available at http://www.ebxml.org. At the first
meeting, there will be a discussion of whether the TC will formally submit
this document to the OASIS membership for adoption as an OASIS Standard.

An initial schedule and list of deliverables for the committee is summarized
below:

* July 17-18, 2001 - First Meeting to be hosted by Sterling Commerce
* October 31, 2001 - ebXML Messaging Service Specification Version 2
Requirements Document ready for review
* 2nd Quarter, 2002 - Initial ebXML Messaging Service Specification Version
2.0 Draft available for review
* 3rd Quarter, 2002 - Final ebXML Messaging Service Specification Version
2.0 Draft available

We propose to establish the TC structure (including election of chair and
other officers) and set a detailed schedule at the first meeting of the
committee to accommodate the needs of the members, including dates for
conference calls (most likely bi-weekly) and face-to-face meetings (most
likely quarterly). Sterling Commerce will host the first meeting in Dallas,
Texas on July 17-18, 2001; the meeting will be face-to-face with opportunity
for dial-in participation.

The TC will conduct its business in English.

Brian Gibb (brian_gibb@stercomm.com) will be the interim chair.

The following OASIS Members, who plan to become members of the new TC,
sponsor this proposal:

* David Burdett , Commerce One (david.burdett@commerceone.com)
* Rik Drummond , Drummond Group, Inc. (rvd2@worldnet.att.net)
* Bob Miller, GE Global Exchange Services (Robert.Miller@gxs.ge.com)
* Jim Hughes, Hewlett-Packard (jim_hughes@hp.com)
* John Ibbotson, IBM (john_ibbotson@uk.ibm.com)
* Brian Gibb, Sterling Commerce (brian_gibb@stercomm.com)
* Chris Ferris Sun Microsystems (chris.ferris@east.sun.com)

Further information about the first meeting may be obtained from the Interim
Chair, Brian Gibb (brian_gibb@stercomm.com).
