US Patent number 6,311,194 covers systems and methods for creating a

personalization and advertising. The patent deals with two major facets:

1.
Knowledge-based and other techniques to automatically and semi-automatically
extract and enhance semantic or domain specific metadata from structured,
semi- structured and unstructured content 

2.
Semantic applications that exploit context-sensitive metadata for providing
the user with highly relevant information and interactivity."
