RE: [xml-dev] WSIO vs. Semantic Web

[ Lists Home | Date Index | Thread Index ]

I hesitate to ask, but can anyone tell me what are the real differences
between web services and the semantic web?

All the best

It may be overspoken, but it is a real controversy.
There are parties who believe that the public focus
of the W3C on the Semantic Web takes resources away
from work on the more immediate requirements for
commercialization (eg, web services). The quote
from Tim Bray is unfortunate out of context, but the
story is real.

W3C mission: Research or standardization? The
dues paying members feel that they have a right
to decide. When Festa asked me, I told him
DARPA was a powerful player in this and actively
supports the Semantic Web, and that if nothing
else, gives it a credible customer. Yet, if the
W3C is to serve its membership, it must listen
and respond if these members make a case that
the Semantic Web is not where they want their
dollars to be spent.

Looks like the beginnings of an invented controversy. "AI-Nut Semantic
Webbers vs. Greedy Conglomerate Web Service-ites". I would hate to see
people fall for this ploy to write exciting copy and end up polarizing
their opinions.
