As we
say in the music business, "don't quit your day job, kid".
Books
are for most of us, I guess, a side income. Last year I managed to spend
all of
that on the music equipment I needed to restart my solo gigs.
That
was good for the tax man, but the bad news is that the book editing
paid
better overall. Book writing isn't the only income that took a hit as
the economy
tumbled, but I bet the rates will bounce back faster there than they will
for
music gigs. :-(
But no
one smiles at me, tips me, buys me meals, takes me to parties, or offers me free
beer
for books, so I'll just have to live with it, I guess.

There are signs that sales are
beginning to pick up again now. It wouldn't surprise me if some authors who
were hit by the slump don't take on any more authoring - it is much simpler to
just do regular consultancy, or even take a job. :) You know what work you are
doing for what return.
