As frustrating as I find namespaces, and as much as I wish they'd been
designed differently, I don't think there's substantial hope of changing
them on any large scale.
Local systems can work just fine without namespaces, or with other
namespace systems which translate into "Namespaces in XML", but I think
the network effect of the W3C spec is too large at this point to be
contested.
(Note that I don't believe that to be the case for any XML specs beyond
XML 1.0 and Namespaces in XML.)
