I think that generally you can use a processing instruction and have your application interpret it.
 
For instance if you have some XML and you want to see it through a browser then you can specify a xml-stylesheet processing instruction and associate a stylesheet that will render the XML in HTML. The result HTML will be actually used by the bowser further and it can contain the <embed ...> to activate the plugin.
