Well, I agree with you that there are way too many types.

On the other hand, if we want to support types, this is the set of types 
that are actually found in XML documents, using either XML Schema or 
RELAX-NG, and vendors are supporting these types. Getting consensus on a 
different set of types would take a long time, and having two sets of types 
adopted for XML might make life more complex, not less complex.
