  Well this either ain't exactly XPath or either ain't exactly DOM.
The issue of the divergence between the XPath data model and DOM has
been known from quite a long time, it should not appear as a surprise.
I do think that providing XPath as a DOM extension makes a lot of
sense from a toolkit perspective (I do it too !) but IMHO the XPath 
data representation subset should be used on trees manipulated with
XPath (since it's the smallest subset functionnalities wise).
