RE: [xml-dev] what is xml most used for

[ Lists Home | Date Index | Thread Index ]

We use SGML/XML for publishing drug information; XML for electronic
products, primarily. For content published to the web, the search engine
runs against XML data, as opposed to the HTML view. Matching on
content-based elements (e.g., <side-effects>) provides a richer search
capability than simple string matches. Queries can be more focused this
way.

Using semantic (content-based) elements also allows us to create a
repository of granular information from which we can easily extract just
those elements relevant to a given product/data-licensing request. By
focusing on structural and semantic elements, the XML can be stored as
format-neutral content and repurposed for a variety of output instances,
print and electronic. <clarification>The repository is not complete yet, but
the above applies to publication XML as well. Same content used for
multiple outputs.</clarification>

Hope this helps.

I was wondering what is the biggest niche that xml has obtained. Like what
projects are you using XML for?
