Title: ANN: XML and databases seminar

XML and Databases
Meet the vendors
organised by XML BeLux
sponsored by Oracle

Tuesday October 15th, XML Belux will be hosting an XML & Databases seminar providing an overview of some of the leading XML Database implementation solutions.

The introductory session will give you an overview of available technologies and practices. This will provide you with a good framework for the technical vendor presentations. These will introduce the latest and greatest of XML DB technology, such as Oracle, Software AG and X-Hive.

The programme

13:00 - 13:30 Welcome coffee

13:30 - 14:30 XML and Databases
An overview
by Steven Noels, Outerthought
An overview of XML-related database technology, starting with the fundamental differences between objects, relational data and XML, that will position the different implementation solutions against each other, such as XML Native databases and XML support in RDBMS. Finally, a status update on XML-optimized query languages such as XPath and XMLQuery will be presented.

This introductory session aims at inspiring you to raise some questions in the following sessions.

14:30 - 15:30 Vendor session 1
Oracle
Oracle9i Release 2 - Oracle XML DB
Oracle XML DB provides a high-performance, native XML storage and retrieval technology available with Oracle9i Release 2. It fully absorbs the W3C XML data model into the Oracle9i Database, and provides new standard access methods for navigating and querying XML. The goal of Oracle XML DB is to combine the advantages of relational database technology with the advantages of XML.

15:30 - 16:00 Coffee break

16:00 - 17:00 Vendor session 2
Software AG
Tamino 3
Tamino XML Server is Software AG's high-performance data management platform designed for storing XML documents in their native format, based upon XML and other open-standard Internet technologies. Tamino XML Server's core services provide highly efficient native XML storage and query capabilities, complemented by a wide range of services and solutions.

In this presentation, we will position Tamino in a global XML based IT infrastructure and describe the core and the enabling XML services of the current version (Tamino 3). We will finish the presentation with an overview of the newest or upcoming Tamino features (XML:DB Api, X-Query, X-Update, DeltaV, DASL, UDDI, .NET,...).

17:00 - 18:00 Vendor session 3
X-Hive
Cocoon, XQuery and X-Hive/DB
Cocoon is a flexible publishing framework that allows you to convert raw XML files into formats like XHTML, PDF, SVG and RTF. Cocoon features an architecture for input, filtering, converting and publishing which will help you to seperate content from style. Cocoon interacts with multiple input sources, including flat files, relational databases and native XML databases.

X-Hive/DB is a powerful native XML database designed for software developers who require advanced XML data processing and storage functionality within their applications. X-Hive/DB supports all major XML standards including XQuery, XPath, XPointer, XLink, XSL-T, XSL-FO and XUpdate. To ensure smooth and rapid integration with existing applications and systems, X-Hive/DB provides an interface to relational databases, bridges to XML editors and full-text search engines and support for J2EE, WebDAV and FTP.

In this session will be demonstrated how to build an XML database application using Cocoon and X-Hive/DB, and how to use XQuery in an XML database application. Furthermore, a Cocoon - X-Hive/DB demo application will be built on the spot.
