I believe that a slightly longer version of that phrase is
correctly attributed to the late Dr C.E.M. Joad, Humanist
and Head of Philosophy of Birkbeck college who did much to
popularise it in the 1940s, together with Lieutenant Commander (Retired)
Rupert Gould better known for having restored the famous Harrison
chronometer - the finest time machine ever made in fact or in
fiction.
