XML really is simple. It's when you try to use it that it gets hard.

XML can be simple insofar as markup can be simple.  I'm aware that angle 
brackets frighten some people, but the general notion of markup is not too 
hard.

Moving beyond that, it gets harder quickly.

Just to be clear, your (one word) answer to the question "Is XML really
simple?" is "No"?
