That could very well be but I'd like to 
not see every application developer reinvent 
what could be a common requirement supported 
by compliant XML processors.

With refactoring, that can happen.
 
Again, I heartily suggest that people keep 
up with the exchanges on the TAG list and 
pay particular attention to the exchanges 
between Tim Bray and Paul Grosso.  They are 
sensible and illuminate where the lines of 
different technical opinions can be drawn.
