If it's going to be done, it should probably be done in a forum designed
to prevent vendor (or even vendor class) lock-in and preserve
interoperability.
Right now, I'm definitely worried that some of the Web Services work may
be an excellent opportunity for XYZ vendor to produce such a thing and
claim ownership of it. Even if they were to be 'generous', there are
many flavors of generosity.
