Could you provide a sample of the syntax for using a namespace prefix in my
XSL?

Unprefixed names in XPath are only from "no namespace" and never from the
default namespace. Since your XML is defining the default namespace, you
are obliged in XPath to prefix all element names from that namespace using
a namespace prefix, even though the source document isn't using a namespace
prefix.
