Extending xs:anyType is certainly allowed -- it's a complex type
definition, so it can be extended. You're right that extending a
mixed type definition with a non-mixed one is an error, and XSV finds
it:

attempt to extend a mixed basetype
into an unmixed type or vice versa (None, anyType)
</schemaError>
Note you have to run XSV locally with the -i switch to get it to check
a schema document thoroughly -- running the web form on a schema
document simply confirms that it is schema-valid per the sForS, but
doesn't check the constraints written in to the REC.
