In the past few weeks I've seen various posts on XML-DEV as well as
reports in the media[0,1,2] that the XML format used by Word (WordML) is
"closed" because no schema is provided. Specifically the following quote
"Microsoft has yet to disclose the proprietary dialect--or underlying
schema--of the XML" is representative of the common sentiment.

However this is not the case, the schema for WordML is available online
for anyone to peruse.

It is posted on line, through the Word content development kit on this

Below is the relevant description and download link:

Microsoft Word XML Content Development Kit Beta 2 -
Provides documentation and samples for XML features in Microsoft Word
2003, Beta 2, which includes information about the user interface,
support for user-defined schemas, the Word XML schema, and the Schema
Library, a sample XML document and schema, and the Microsoft XML 5.0
Software Development Kit. You can now download the SDK that was included
on the Developer CD present in the Beta 2 kit. (April 24, 2003)
