It seems I was a bit hasty in screening the results of validating Bob's example. The validator in System.Xml also does recurse after matching a lax wildcard.

The W3C XML Schema validator in MSXML 4 recurses while the validator in System.Xml of the .NET Framework does not.

I can't quickly check, but are you saying the the MS schema validator
_doesn't_ recurse after matching a lax wildcard?
