Have a look at the STMML schema at
http://www.xml-cml.org/dtdschema/index.html . This was developed by
Peter Murray-Rust who also developed the CML (Chemical markup
language). It covers units amongst other things. I can send you
examples files if this would be useful. Let me know if you find other
standards for doing the same, especially if they look more promising, we
are also interested in this.
