This will open Pandora's Box.
Some applications do need a binary, such as X3D,
and are moving smartly to design one. Terms such
as 'optimized XML' scare me. I shall be interested
in the details of the other attempts, but on the
appropriate list. Thanks Robin.

It's what many call "binary XML", or variants thereon. It just so
happens that while many attempts at optimisation walk down the road of
using a binary format, not all do.
