An unfortunate occurrence with many documents in XP is that the Master File Table (MTF) continually grows. See the report the Defragmenter gives. It does not shrink when files are deleted. One needs a special tool for that.

Large numbers of files in a folder/directory can cause problems for some older *nix filesystems too...
