Even when the major vendors don't jump on an XML
language, it can find its way into serious use.
X3D continues slowly to gain serious applications
even though it is from a non-W3C consortium and
is standardized through ISO. Perhaps the lack
of good open alternatives is one factor. Another
is a community with a need that they will meet
themselves using off-the-shelf standards and
technologies.
Vendors can catch up when the market is worth
their time and trouble. To be trite, there
are many paths up the mountain.
