Nothing - it's a namespace prefix (a label) that is a means for a parser
to associate schema constructs (elements, data types, etc.) with
namespace identifiers. This alleviates the need for the namespace
identifier to be used throughout a schema in each place in which it
would be required with that approach, which can be unwieldy - and would
also require numerious updates in the schema should the namespace
identifier be changed for whatever reason.

xs and xsd are very frequently used as prefixes for the W3C Schema
namespace, and so I would personally recommend that you use one of them
(which one probably does not matter), for familiarity purposes.
Otherwise there is no technical need to use these specific prefixes.
