Some of us are already there. Real-time 3D chat
is a reality. All running on international standards,
cheap hardware, free clients, and so on.
What is missing are the conceptual systems. We know
how to do that but actually, the VR systems work fine
for that too.
The big problem is still cheap content. Sites like
Jewel of Indra (note: xxx) are created by artists
from across the globe and have stunning content even
some at game quality. These guys even have their
own streaming radio station with good quality and
no drops outs, so real time 3D and streaming audio
running on a 56k dialup. Excuse me, but there are
no technical obstacles; there is a big dearth of
imagination and talent.

A viewpoint can also be expressed in 2D if I can, as a user, do some choices
of the kind of representation I want. But we are very far from there..... So
imagine now how far we are from virtual world.
