Google is taking on an interesting challenge with Google Base. It took several
years for IBM, Informix and Oracle to refine their universal server or universal
database technology. One aspect is being able to support a variety of indexing
schemes, not just the b-tree index that's efficient for traditional SQL tabular
data. Servers had to be extensible with pluggable access methods and indexing
schemes such as quadtrees and K-D-B trees.
The web page for Google Base says it will store "all type of content" -- from
protein sequences to items for sale.
