This concept should not be new to readers of this list.  In the article, the authors are using data gathering to tune the customization.  In the past, we have discussed dynamic schemas that are modified by feedback from the environment.  The applications are different, but the solutions are variations of feedback-control.
 
It can be useful to look at different models for tuning the feedback system itself.  PIDS controllers are one example.  Analogizing these to dynamic schema systems shouldn't be difficult.
