They predated the S being added to SGML.

  The DCF GML User's Guide (IBM SH20-9160), which I wrote in 1978,
  includes the first published formal document type "descriptions"
  (DTDs),   

  .....



and of course the notion of a formal grammar against which a language
could be parsed is a lot older than that.
