They are already different when it comes to namespace handling.

The 'principal node type' of the self-axis is 'element' no matter
where you refer to the axis, so self::type will look for an element
in no namespace with the local name 'type'. This is defined in

  http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath#node-tests

Others might be able to explain the rationale behind this design
decision, if that's your question.
