I tend to find more mixed environments, FWIW.  Your last remark is
interesting because of having spent the last few hours looking into a system
that uses XML/XSL extensively for app-generation of the forms over the
relational db where the relational tables are used as the initial set of
templates.  Data modeling there may be more mature in the abstract but is
still pretty easy to get wrong.  RADs expose that earlier acting almost like
a data design tool in the intermediate stage.

I agree that this adds to the mental overhead when combined with mixed
language systems.  As I've said before, it is almost amazing the web works
at all much less that predictions from some are that in five years, web
programming will be all one does (maybe optimistic for some; it is all I do
now.)

What I am not seeing is much XQuery for the document side or at all.   I
suspect many/most are still loading and DOM walking as ugly as that can be,
shredding or simply relying on XSL.

I think there have been numerous debates whether relational model is
useful or XML, or hybrid (as we are discussing in this thread).

One of the factors for choosing between the relational storage and XML
is the need of normalization. For highly normalized data requirements,
choosing relational storage is good (at the performance cost of
joining tables). For denormalized data requirements, we can choose
XML.

Moreover, data modeling discipline in relational world is more mature
than in the XML world.
