Hi Andrew and Michael,
Thank you for the feedback on the MusicXML 2.0 XSD. I apologize for
the delay in replying. I was attending and presenting at the
International Conference on Music Information Retrieval
(http://ismir2008.ismir.net) last week and got behind on my e-mail.
The MusicXML 2.0 XSD carefully limits the global elements to the two
document elements, and we do not want to change that. The top-level
score, part, and measure types were made local since they alone do not
generalize between the partwise and timewise formats. If these local
type declarations cause a problem in practice, we can revisit this in
a future version of the XSD. I suspect that most query applications
will not be working with these high-level elements, but we will see
how things evolve.
There are indeed many types of validation that it would be nice to add
using either Schematron or XSD 1.1 assertions. The XSD captures lots
more of MusicXML's documented semantic rules than the DTD does, but
assertions are needed to get to the next level of validation. This is
another area of possible future work for the MusicXML XSD.
Best regards,
Michael Good
