The complexity of an application that would benefit from the above
would also suggest that such an application has to interact with the
outside world and has some complex "business logic". None of which
is easy, practical, or even possible to do from XML processing
languages such as XSLT/XQuery.

I would actually be interested to hear about any non-trivial and 
practical applications other than "XML in, XML out", format changing
kind, that are written exclusively in XSTL/XQuery.
