Fellow XML-Dev'ers,
OASIS has opened a 60-day public review of the new context/value
association for genericode file format:
http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/codelist/200910/msg00005.html
Comments are most welcome and are sent to:
http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/comments/form.php?wg_abbrev=codelist
Code lists and identifier lists are examples of controlled
vocabularies of values (e.g. currency codes, country codes, product
identifiers, etc.)
For some communities of users (e.g. those with business-oriented XML
documents) the management of controlled vocabularies presents
particular challenges for document modeling. While communities may
standardize document structures, trading partners within the
community have their own constraints that may change on an hourly
basis yet must work within the community framework.
List-level and value-level metadata for controlled vocabularies are
managed using the OASIS genericode file format, published in 2007:
http://docs.oasis-open.org/codelist/genericode
For data entry by the sender, the appropriate lists of values and
mechanisms for disambiguation need to be well-defined for the proper
semantics to be represented. For validation by the receiver, the
same lists and disambiguation ensures the proper semantics are
interpreted. That disambiguation is done through attributes or
elements associated with the controlled vocabulary information
items. Simple schema language enumerations are insufficient to the
task of associating instance-level metadata and the extension and
restriction of controlled vocabularies to meet business needs.
Instance-level metadata for the application of controlled
vocabularies to XML document structures is expressed using the OASIS
context/value association using genericode specification being
announced for public review.
The members of the committee look forward to any comments you may
have on the file format itself, sent through the formal OASIS
channels (any comments on the validation or visualization or training
cited below are to be sent to me privately please).
Thank you!

association is freely available to experiment with or deploy these
file formats for validation:

is being commercially offered in Copenhagen this coming Tuesday,
